US World Championship Trials: Day One Live Recap

2022 USA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TRIALS

TUESDAY MORNING HEAT SHEETS

The United States International Team Trials, which will serve as the selection competition for this summer, including the June World Championships, begin this morning in Greensboro, North Carolina. Day 1 will include preliminary races of the 200 butterfly and 100 freestyle. The women’s 800m freestyle and men’s 1500m freestyle will also be contested today in timed final races with the first rounds of swimming this afternoon before the first rounds race in the final. The race starts at 9 a.m. Eastern Time.

Freshman at Stanford Regan Smith tops the women’s 200 butterfly, and her Olympic teammate Hali Glitter is right behind her with the pair well ahead of the pack. by Cal Julian Trenton comes top-seeded in the men’s 200 butterfly, but Georgia’s undergraduate Luca Urlandothe third seed, actually holds the field’s fastest record since high school.

Many Olympians highlight the women’s 100m freestyle, with Weitzeil Abbey, Torri Huske and Erika Brown holding the first three seeds. Florida Pro Caeleb Dresselthe third-fastest man of all time in the 100 freestyle, holds the top seed in men’s.

200m butterfly women

There was a long delay before round three due to an apparent error in the timing system, but that didn’t dismiss the second seed. Hali Glitter, who won the run in 2:07.75. Flickinger finished as the best qualifier.

First in the series Regan Smith used a powerful halfback to easily win his round in 2:09.83. Smith qualified fourth overall after the heats.

Charlotte Hook of the TAC Titans, a high school student committed to Stanford, won her heat in 2:09.51 to qualify second overall.

200m butterfly men

by Cal Julian Trenton blasted a huge run in the preliminaries, cutting nearly four tenths off his seed to take the top seed in 1:54.34. He swam away from his heat and held the last 50.

Louisville pro Zach Harting took the win in his round, holding his second seed to qualify for 2nd place in 1:55.83. Touching just behind him in his run, Georgian pro Chase Kalisz qualified third in 1:56.04.

Luca Urlando, who arrived as the third seed, fourth qualifier in 1:56.50. Urlando looked strong through the first 150, but a final split of 32 seconds saw him fade at 1:56, well short of his lifetime best.

Despite not qualifying for the A final, 15-year-old Thomas Heilman of Cavalier Aquatics clocked a new lifetime best of 1:58.01 to advance to the B final.

100m freestyle women

Florida-based Natalie Hinds clocked an impressive 53.77 to take the top seed heading into the final. Hinds was a member of the Olympic team last summer in the 4×100 freestyle relay.

TAC Titans senior Claire Curzan tied with future Stanford teammate Torri Huske for second in 54.16, while Louisville pro Mallory Comerford dropped a bit from her seed to qualify for fourth in 54.18.

First in the series Weitzeil Abbey qualified 5th in 54.19, while Tennessee pro Erika Brownwho represented the United States in this event at the Olympics last summer, qualified 6th in 54.27.

100m freestyle men

First in the series Caeleb Dressel took care of business this morning, qualifying first in 48.12. He held off Brooks Curry, who won the NCAA title last month. Curry qualified fourth in 48.36.

Arizona State pro Ryan Held qualified second in 48.20, while Texas senior Drew Kibler qualified third in 48.28. Florida senior Kieran Smith, best known for his mid-distance prowess, appeared to expand his shorter range as he dropped nearly a full second off his seed to qualify fifth in 48.50.
