These meteorites contain all the building blocks of DNA
Three meteorites contain the molecular building blocks of DNA and its cousin RNA, scientists have recently discovered. A subset of these building blocks had previously been detected in meteorites, but the rest of the collection seemed mysteriously absent from space rocks – until now.
The new discovery supports the idea that around four billion years ago, a barrage of meteorites could have provided the molecular ingredients needed to jump-start the emergence of the oldest life on Earth, the researchers say.
The term “arachnids” probably conjures up visions of spiders: from creepy, creepy things spinning silently from webs in the corner of the room to large, hairy creatures with fangs – like the mythical Shelob or Aragog – stalking you in the dark. . But just how big (and fierce) can these arachnids get? Better yet,…
In the animal world, there are examples of creatures that use extremely fast speeds to capture prey – or avoid being captured. Now, for the first time, scientists have observed the use of ultra-fast action in a very specific scenario: as a means of escaping sexual cannibalism. Scientists have discovered male spiders of the species…
An illustration of a near-zero index metamaterial shows that as light passes through, it travels in a constant phase. Credit: Second Bay Studios/Harvard SEAS In physics, as in life, it’s always good to see things from different angles. Since the beginning of quantum physics, the way light travels and interacts with the matter around it…
Animals carry “mutational clocks” in their cells that dictate how quickly their DNA picks up mutations. And across species, animals tend to die once they reach a certain number of mutations, according to new research. It turns out that in long-lived mammals like humans, these mutational clocks run slower than in short-lived mammals like mice,…
When two bodies in space are close enough to each other, their gravity acts as a brake, slowing them down until one’s rotation “locks” to match its orbit. This tidal lock means that one side of the smaller body always faces the larger one – it’s the reason we only see one side of the…
Ancient, long-necked sea monsters must have evolved large bodies to rule Earth’s oceans around 200 million years ago, according to a new study. The large bodies helped the extinct creatures swim at high speeds even though they had bizarre appendages that might otherwise have increased drag and slowed them down. Bigger bodies meant more muscle…
