Mikel Arteta’s side were a bit shaky defensively but they had the extra quality in midfield and attack to seal a second big win in four days as they have now beaten Chelsea and Manchester United in back-to-back wins while scoring seven goals in the process.

As for Manchester United, well, that was better than their defeat at Liverpool, but Ralf Rangnick’s side can pretty much say goodbye to their best hopes for this season.

Below we reveal our Arsenal vs Manchester United player ratings from a wild clash, with ratings out of 10 and analysis on each player.

Arsenal player ratings

Aaron Ramsdale:6 – Some really sloppy moments with the ball at the foot but a nice save to deprive Dalot in the second half.

Cedric:5 – Generally struggled to stop Sancho and Telles and not great on the ball as he under-hit several crosses.

Ben White: 6 – A little dragged by Ronaldo and caught on the cross for United’s goal.

Gabrielle: 6 – See above. He made a superb block to deflect a wide shot from Bruno Fernandes after a poor giveaway from Ramsdale.

Nuno Tavares:6 – What a weird game. He scored his first goal for Arsenal, was manhandled by Elanga as he could have conceded a penalty in the first half. He then conceded a penalty for a silly handball but Fernandes missed it. He did a few races in full swing. Still very raw, especially defensively.

mohamed elneny: 7 – Solid demonstration from the Egyptian player. With Partey out, he adds much-needed steel to this Arsenal midfielder.

Xhaka Granite: 7 – Superb strike to make it 3-1 and he had a stupid warning just before. Peak Xhaka. Other than that, a decent display.

Bukayo Saka:8 – His shot led to Arsenal’s opener and he was fouled for the penalty for their second and then scored it. Worrying that he came out injured late.

Martin Odegaard: 8.5 – He oozes class in midfield and looks so confident to join Nketiah and Saka in the final third. Playing his best football since joining Arsenal.

Emile Smith Rowe:5 – Never really got involved in the game and was substituted in the second half.

Eddie Nketiah: 6 – Missed a big chance and took his offside well. Worked his socks off in attack and created space for Saka and others to exploit.

Substitutes
Gabriel Martinelli (64′ for Smith Rowe): 6 – Worked hard, especially defensively.
Rob Holding (74′ for Saka): 6 – Helped sort things out at the back.
Takehiro Tomiyasu (90′ for Cedric): N/A – Received a huge ovation on his return from injury.

Manchester United player ratings

David de Gea:7 – Made some good saves and is the only United player you can’t pop on.

Diogo Dalot: 6 – Cut on the goal of Nuno Tavares and not terrible defensively. He hit the bar and the post and looked very dangerous in attack.

Victor Lindeloff: 6 – Did well but was sometimes surprised by the movement of Nketiah.

Raphael Varane: 6 – I don’t know how he missed the ball on Arsenal’s first goal. Installed after that.

Alex Telles: 5 – Like Varane, he missed the ball that led to the opener for Arsenal. Saka gave him a scorching time and he gave away a penalty, which may have been a bit harsh. Still, Shaw is the first choice when he returns.

Nemanja Mátic: 6 – Kept the ball well in slow motion and sent a nice cross for Ronaldo’s goal.

Scott McTominay:6 – Fought on, as always, but couldn’t impact the game and missed a big chance in the first half as he headed wide.

Antoine Elanga: 7 – His rhythm allowed him to access promising positions but could not finish his chances. His composure in the final third is the next big step in his young career.

Bruno Fernandes:6 – Had a good effort deflected wide in the first half, played well overall but his missed penalty was the highlight and summed up his regression this season.

Jadon Sancho: 7 – Tricky as always and gave Cédric a hard time. Always wanted the ball and wanted to cut inside and link up with Ronaldo.

Cristiano Ronaldo:8 – Took his goal very well, set up Elanga several times and scored another one that was just offside. Its quality is amazing.

Substitutes
Marcus Rashford (77′ for Matic): 5 – Tried to get involved centrally but had little serve.
Jesse Lingard (77′ for Elanga): 5 – Couldn’t get on the ball at all during his brief appearance.
Juan Mata (84′ for Fernandes): N/A
